Chapter 3 Part 2

  • Basically, this chapter is further establishes the development of Julia and Winston's relationship
  • Julia reveals more about her past- like the fact that she works for the Anti-Sex League, in the Fiction Dept.
  • She makes herself seem rebellious in Winston's eyes
  • She says she'll oppose the Party just for the sake of breaking rules but won't actually join a rebellion (Brotherhood). This makes her seem a bit childish
  • Julia and Winston go on to discuss about Winston's wife which leads on to Julia's view of how chastity and political orthodoxy are connected.
  • Chapter marks the deepening of their relationship and an exchange in their political view
Q: "It was not merely that the sex instinct created a world of its own...which therefore had to be destroyed if possible"
T: Dialogue
E: shows the brutality of the totalitarianism society they live in. While other dictatorships merely subdued people's voices, this dictatorship attempts to destroy something that makes people human beings in order to induce hysteria for leader worship. In other words, they are trying to break into you and take away your identity.

Q: "We are the dead"
T: morose tone
E: again shows the sheer power and control that the Party has over the people, which has created such a mentality in people that they believe that rebelling against the party is instantaneous death.

(sorry for lack of QTE's. more to come soon as soon as Super Awesome Sachin finds time in his Super Unorganised Timetable)
